About JM

JM studied computer science and computer engineering at Northwestern University, and then spent the first arc of his career in high frequency trading for 9 years as a trader, trading team manager, and director of business strategy in the office of the CEO at one of the pioneering HFT firms, GETCO, which once accounted for nearly 40% of daily NASDAQ trading volume.

After that, JM transitioned into product management to help Groupon transition from daily deal to NASDAQ for local commerce - helping hungry diners find restaurants with excess tables, supply, labor, etc - the right dining opportunity at the right market clearing price.

JM then went on to join Uber in 2014 as the first PM for Marketplace. He built out the first version of uberPOOL, an on demand carpooling product that allowed multiple riders going similar destinations to share a car. He went on to build out foundational product teams in Marketplace, including rider/driver matching, rider structural & surge pricing, driver positioning, and extensions of uberPOOL including uberBUS, a 15 seater minibus version with semi structured routes and dynamic fleet movement. In his last year at Uber, he moved over to Eats to run Delivery Marketplace.

After spending a year at DoorDash running product for Merchant Platform, he recently joined Waymo as product lead for commercialization, leading the charge to transition the company from a science project culture focused on enabling cars to drive themselves to a real world product with product market fit, sustainable unit economics, and real habitual external customers.

About Rhythm of Being

In addition to his professional career in product management, which took him from individual contributor to senior director managing teams of up to 40 PMs, JM started pursuing an interest in coaching in 2017. He underwent a yearlong training program with the Conscious Leadership Group to get a coaching certification in conscious leadership. He continues to further his development as a coach by getting his own coaching both individually and in group forums focused on commitment to self awareness and lifelong personal learning and growth.

Rhythm of Being is the coaching methodology that JM developed as a result of his trainings and mentoring/coaching influences over the years. It is centered around the idea that in order to change or modify what you have in your life relative to what you want, you have to look closely at what you’re doing, as well as how you’re doing those things. Working backwards from the results and goals you want to achieve, we look at your rhythm of doing - how you’re managing your energy and time moment to moment, day to day, week to week. And then we look at your rhythm of being - how are you showing up for the meetings, tasks, relationships, and content of your life, both wanted and unwanted, expected and unexpected. Are you reacting to life and the people, circumstances, and conditions around you from fear, threat, and reactivity, or from presence, trust, and love?

Rhythm of Being is a combination of this work around context (how you’re being with the content of your life) and content focused on developing product leaders, based on JM’s experiences in product management and transitioning from IC to senior product leader. It’s a combination of coaching, mentoring, teaching, and advising targeted at product and tech leaders.
